Saturday, November 17 through December 23: Bachman's might seem like a strange place to catch a holiday show. But for the last two decades, the Minneapolis plant and garden retailer has staged their Santa and Albert the Elf show. Santa is played by professional storyteller Mike Mann. Albert is played by Kevin Dutcher, an actor who also happens to run the music for the Twins ballgames. This year, Albert tries to teach Santa to dance, with unintended results, as a surprise gift for Mrs. Claus. Check out a preview here. The 25 minute show gives the audience a chance to sing carols and take some post show Santa photos. Young People's Ofrendas through December 3: In celebration of Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), students from several area high schools, including Humboldt in St. Paul, worked with classroom teachers and Minneapolis Institute of Arts curators Joe Horse Capture and Amanda Thompson Rundahl to create ofrendas (shrines) to honor friends, family or community members who have passed away. : through December 2: "The Cat in the Hat" by Dr. Seuss is being performed for the first time in the United States at the Children's Theatre Company. First produced by the National Theatre of Great Britain, this stage adaptation is directed locally by Jason Ballweber using Twin Cities actors and the Brits' set and props, which faithfully mimic the book's line drawings. All the dialogue is pulled straight from the rhyming text, with no additional words. Renee Valois review in the Pioneer Press says company actor Dean Holt is perfectly cast as the smug cat, who shows up at the house of two bored children one rainy day and wreaks havoc while their mother is out. Lost Egypt through January 1, 2013: Climb a fake camel and see a real mummy in this exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota. "Lost Egypt: Ancient Secrets, Modern Science" includes filmed interviews with archaeologists, a replica of a tomb,kate spade outlet, and artifacts such as canopic jars and statues of Egyptian gods on loan from the Brooklyn Museum. The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia provided the mummy. Visitors can even get a sense of what it was like to build the pyramids by dragging a big block,sac lancel, and then experiencing how ancient engineering made the work easier. China's Terracotta Warriors through January 20: "China's Terracotta Warriors" features eight of the famed terracotta warriors are on display, along with more than 100 other objects that bring to life the era of China's first emperor. The famous life sized figurines were discovered in the 1970s as farmers drilling for a well accidentally broke into the ancient tomb of Qin Shihuang and discovered 7,000 warriors that had been created to protect the emperor in the afterlife.
